Lube

Water-based, silicone and hybrid lubes. Water-based lube works with all toy materials; check the brand's guidance before using silicone lube with silicone toys.

How to choose a lube

The base of a lubricant decides how long it lasts, how easy it is to wash off, and whether it works with your toys and condoms. This collection has water-based, silicone-based and hybrid lubes, plus thicker anal formulas, flavored and warming or cooling lubes.

BaseGood to knowCondoms & toys
Water-basedEasy to wash off; can dry out and need reapplying.Generally safe with latex condoms and compatible with every toy material.
Silicone-basedLasts longer and works in water; takes soap to wash off.Generally safe with latex condoms. Many silicone-toy brands advise against using it on silicone toys.

Specialty lubes

  • Anal lubes are usually thicker, such as Wicked Jelle, Pjur Analyse Me! and Doc Johnson A-Play.
  • Flavored lubes are made for oral sex; sexual-health educators suggest keeping them to oral and external use. Check the ingredients on the product page.
  • Warming, cooling and tingling lubes add a sensation, but the ingredients that create it can irritate sensitive skin. Try a small amount first.
  • Fragrance-free and “sensitive” formulas from brands such as Wicked and Pjur leave out added scent.

Questions people ask

Which lube is safe with condoms?

Water-based and silicone-based lubes are generally considered safe with latex condoms; oil-based products are not. Always check the brand’s label.

Can I use silicone lube with a silicone toy?

Many toy brands recommend against it because it can damage the toy’s surface. Use water-based lube unless the toy’s brand says otherwise.

Is flavored lube okay for intercourse?

Follow the label: some flavored lubes are labeled for oral use only, others are multi-use.
