Anal toy buying guide

This collection covers butt plugs, anal beads, prostate massagers and vibrating anal toys. Whatever you choose, the most important feature is the same: a toy made for anal use has a flared base or a retrieval handle, so it can’t slip all the way in.

Types of anal toys

  • Butt plugs: a tapered shape, a narrower neck and a flared base, meant to stay in place. Many are sold in graduated sets of three sizes.
  • Anal beads: a row of beads, often increasing in size, with a ring or handle at the end.
  • Prostate massagers: curved toys designed to reach the prostate. Some are hands-free designs such as Aneros; others vibrate, rotate or connect to an app.
  • Vibrating plugs: plugs with a motor, often with a remote. Brands here include b-Vibe, Lovense and Bang!.
  • Jeweled and metal plugs: decorative plugs such as the Booty Sparks and Crystal Delights ranges, usually in metal or glass.

How to choose

  • Start small. Compare insertable length and the widest diameter in the specifications. Beginner sets with graduated sizes let you size up gradually.
  • Check the base. Look for a clearly flared base or a sturdy retrieval ring. Our beginner guide explains why this matters and links to medical sources.
  • Material. Silicone is the most common material here, according to brand listings; metal and glass are also available. Material affects which lube you can use and how you clean the toy (materials guide).
  • Controls. Vibrating toys may have buttons, a remote or app control. A remote makes it easier to adjust a toy you can’t reach.

Lube is not optional

The anus doesn’t produce its own lubrication, so anal play needs lube. Thicker water-based or hybrid formulas are popular for anal use; check the toy’s listing for lube compatibility. See our lube collection and lube guide.
