Dildo buying guide
Dildos range from small, smooth beginner shapes to large realistic models, strap-on compatible toys and vibrating or thrusting versions. The most useful things to compare are size, material, base and firmness.
Size
Product pages list total length, insertable length and diameter or circumference. Insertable length is the number to compare, because it excludes the base and handle. If you own a toy you like, measure it and use it as a reference; if not, a smaller size is the usual place to start.
Material and firmness
- Silicone is the most common material in this collection, according to the brand listings. Firmness varies from soft and flexible to firm; some realistic models use dual-density silicone with a firmer core and a softer outer layer.
- TPE and similar soft “skin-like” materials are used for many realistic toys. They feel softer but are porous, which affects cleaning and which lube to use.
- Glass and metal toys are rigid and smooth.
Our materials guide explains porous and non-porous materials and why it matters.
Base and harness use
- Suction-cup bases stick to smooth surfaces such as tile or glass for hands-free use.
- Harness-compatible dildos have a flared base that fits an O-ring harness. Many listings say whether a toy works with a strap-on harness, and some come with one.
- For anal use, a toy needs a flared base; see our anal toys collection and beginner guide.
Vibrating, thrusting and specialty dildos
Some dildos add vibration, heating, thrusting or a remote. Others are double-ended, squirting or fantasy-shaped. These features are listed in each product’s specifications.

Questions people ask
What size dildo should I start with?
There’s no single answer, but beginners often choose a smaller, smooth toy and size up later. Compare insertable length and diameter rather than total length.
Which lube should I use?
Water-based lube works with every material. Many silicone-toy brands advise against silicone lube. See our lube guide.
Can I use any dildo with a harness?
Only ones with a base that fits the harness ring. Check the listing for harness compatibility.
